AU SAFGRAD FACILITATED A SUCCESSFUL MISSION OF AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION AGENDA 2063 DOMESTICATION TEAM IN OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso became the 30th African Union Member State to receive the African Union Commission Agenda 2063 Domestication Team. The mission was successfully conducted from the 10th to the 13th of October 2016. During the mission officials from the Government confirmed that the country has already taken into account Agenda 2063 its development strategies notably within its new national development plan.

The AUC Team included Dr. Tijan Jallow, Agenda 203 Senior Consultant, Dr Ahmed Elmekass, AU SAFGRAD Coordinator, Mr. Tichawona Shumba, Senior Policy Officer (Planning), Mr. Youssoupha Mbengue, AU SAFGRAD Information and Communication Officer, and Mrs. Eleonore SAYAH, AU SAFGRAD Bilingual Secretary.

The main objectives of the AUC domestication mission to Burkina Faso were to start the process of Agenda 2063 domestication and popularization in Burkina Faso, to establish the state of progress in the domestication of Agenda 2063 in Burkina Faso, to exchange views / experiences on current domestication efforts with the various Burkina Faso stakeholders and to explore opportunities for future AUC/Burkina Faso collaboration to ensure the successful domestication and implementation of Agenda 2063 in Burkina Faso.

During the four day mission the AUC team held fruitful deliberations with senior Burkinabe government officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economic Development and the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso. The team held intensive technical working sessions with the Directorate General of Economic Planning at which the Burkina Faso 2016-2020 was critically reviewed to establish its global alignment to the Agenda 2063 and explore avenues of ensuring deeper alignment through sectorial plans and ministerial frameworks.

Further technical working sessions were held with the National Institute of Statistics as well as with United Nations Residents Coordinator. During the deliberations the issue of integrated implementation of Agenda 2063 and SDGs was discussed. The working session also stressed the importance of cooperation between the African Union and the UN system to ensure successful implementation of both Agendas.

In addition, the AUC team organized and oversubscribed Agenda 2063 Domestication workshop at which the Agenda 2063 was presented in full in front of an Agenda 2063 enthusiastic audience made up senior government officials, civil society organizations, representatives of women and youth organizations and the media.
