AU SAFGRAD HELD IN ADDIS ABABA (ETHIOPIA) THE EXPERTS’ WORKSHOP OF THE DRAFT CONTINENTAL IRRIGATION AND WATER DEVELOPMENT (CIAD) FRAMEWORK

The experts’ validation workshop of the draft Continental Irrigation and Agriculture Water Development (CIAD) framework was held at the Conference Venue of AUC headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The 2-day workshop (11-12 December 2018) was organized by AU-SAFGRAD as part of its support program to facilitate the promotion and adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) technologies in the continent.

Agricultural water is central to agriculture-based livelihoods. Reliable access to sufficient quantities and quality of water is essential to increase crop production, mitigate drought and strengthen livelihood resilience in the Continent.  The AU’s Malabo 2014 Declaration has defined a set of priorities and strategies to achieve agriculture-led prosperity (improved livelihood and shared prosperity) in Africa. Water control and use in both irrigation and rain-fed farming feature prominently in the prescription to doubling productivity and ensuring sustainability in the sector.

The workshop attracted a wide range of irrigation and agricultural water experts from within and outside the Continent in framing the direction to advance the development of irrigation and Agwater use in the Continent. The Expert meeting deliberated on issues of continental relevance as well as strategic and technical concerns that will impact regional and national domestication of the Continental blueprint.
