Training of young irrigation professionals on Managing Irrigation Schemes and Adaptation to Water Scarcity in African Agriculture. Medea, Algeria, 01-12th October 2023

Africa Union Semi Arid Food Grains Research and Development (AU-SAFGRAD) in collaboration with Arab League’ Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries (AFTAAC) organized a 12-day, fully residential and intensive, training for young Agricultural Water Management professionals nominated from 11 francophone Africa Union’ Member States.

The theme for the 2023 training was “Managing Irrigation Schemes and adaptation to water scarcity in African agriculture”.  The training targeted young and early career AWM professionals from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as National Agricultural Research Institutions (NARIS). The beneficiaries were nominated by their respective national institutions and selected based on their involvement in irrigation agriculture planning and implementation in their countries.  A total of 12 trainees from 11 countries participated in the 12day training. The Opening ceremony of the training held at the institute on the 1st of October 2023. It was chaired by the representative of the honorable Minister of Agriculture, Algeria; the Director of training. It was also attended by the staff of AFTAAC lead by their Secretary General and AUC (SAFGRAD) staff. The course adopted a mix of methods based on adult-learning approaches to capacity development. The training also, included knowledge sharing by subject matter experts, group work, participatory games and tools, and field visits to relevant case studies. The expectation is that the professionals will utilize the skills, knowledge and network acquired during the training to improve on their on-the-job performance in their countries. The course module was designed to support knowledge delivery in participatory planning, infrastructure operation and maintenance (O&M), good water use about water scarcity and productivity, prevention or mitigation of environmental problems (e.g. salinity, water quality and small dams planning management), as well as related governance issues critical to scheme operation. The closing ceremony held 12th October 2023 and the 2 hours program commenced at 1500. It was attended by the representative of the Minister (MADR), staff of the institute and SAFGRAD staff.
